Season Notes: This time-traveling sci-fi romp is pretty fun in a guilty pleasure kind of way, but I’m baffled, at least to this point, by those who call it brilliant. The production values often come off as amateurish, and it’s not especially cleverly written. I enjoyed Christopher Eccleston’s performance as Dr. Who, and Billie Piper is smoking hot as Rose, but there’s not much to rave about anywhere…it all goes down easy like fast food, and I’ll have no problem checking out S2, but I’ll need a solid uptick in quality to continue on from there. Having said that, many seem to think it really takes off from S2, so I’m cautiously optimistic going forward.

Season Wrap: Very good, though unfair expectations burdened it from the start: S5 was never going to match the knock-you-flat impact of the John Lithgow-led S4. S5 starts off a bit slowly, but quickly picks up steam as the relationship between Dexter and Lumin (Julia Stiles, this season’s guest star) develops nicely. The psychology between the two develops in a (mostly) fascinating fashion, especially during a section from about episodes 7-10: the intensity, power, and emotion operates at a consistently heightened pitch, and as viewers, we’re tantalized that S5 might actually come close to S4 after all. Alas, it wasn’t to be. The second-to-last episode was solid, but a real step down from the four that preceded it—it’s the finale, though, that really let me down. It wasn’t that it was terrible; it’s that it was so unexciting. It should have either been a two-hour finale, which would have allowed “Dexter” to wrap up loose ends while maintaing the tension that had been building, or focused less on tying up storylines and more on energy. Instead, we get what amounts to a workmanlike conclusion to an otherwise very strong season of a great show. It was a definite letdown, and the prime villain never matches Lithgow’s Trinity, or the Ice Truck Killer from S1. Still, despite the mediocre ending, S5 of “Dexter” has many more pluses than minuses and should, of course, be required viewing for fans of the series. Michael C. Hall is brilliant as always, but Jennifer Carpenter (Deb)—who continues to drastically improve each season—and Stiles, who I’m not usually much of a fan of, match him scene for scene.

Notes: The two-hour season debut of AMC’s newest toy is mostly excellent. A few moments of unnecessary swelling music reminded me of The Lovely Bones too much for my tastes, but aside from those isolated sequences, the atmosphere, pacing and editing were terrific. One scene in particular packed a helluva punch. I’d be shocked if it wasn’t directly inspired by “Twin Peaks,” as it has the same tone and core storyline. Very much looking forward to seeing how this one develops.
